The Background
In 2023, Huddersfield’s iconic restaurant The 3 Acres suffered extensive damage in a devastating fire. Known for its character, quality, and long-standing reputation, the venue faced the monumental challenge of not just rebuilding but restoring its distinctive identity.
Radcliffe Construction was appointed as principal contractor for the £2 million restoration. With deep local roots and a reputation for delivering complex refurbishments, our team took on the responsibility of bringing The 3 Acres back to life.
What We Did
Over an intensive eight-month programme, Radcliffe Construction project managed the full rebuild and refurbishment of the entire building.
The kitchen – which was completely destroyed in the fire - was one of the first priorities. The team rebuilt it from the ground up, including the installation of a new warm-deck roof and coordination of a new £450,000 state-of-the-art commercial kitchen by Greens Commercial Kitchens.
The rest of the building - including the restaurant, bar, and bedrooms - was severely smoke-damaged. These spaces were fully stripped back to the shell, revealing both opportunities and structural challenges typical of a building of this age.
With a strong focus on detail and quality, Radcliffe Construction worked closely with owners Tom and Lauren Truelove to retain and enhance the restaurant’s unmistakable identity. This involved close coordination with M&E contractors to discreetly integrate new pipework and wiring without compromising the final aesthetic.
The Result
The rebuild of The 3 Acres stands as a flagship project for Radcliffe Construction. The result is a carefully restored and thoughtfully upgraded venue that honours the character of the original, while elevating its performance and finish.
The project was completed on time, under intense public anticipation, and delivered with minimal disruption thanks to meticulous planning, committed subcontractor partnerships, and expert project management.
Tom Truelove, owner of The 3 Acres, described the collaboration as a rebuild "from the ground up," praising Radcliffe Construction for our professionalism, dedication, and expertise throughout.
Paul Radcliffe, managing director at Radcliffe Construction, said: "We understand what The 3 Acres means to the local community. It’s been a privilege to help bring it back to life."
